3 WOMEN-LED ORGANIZATIONS:

  1. Giving Joy Goods

    • Giving Joy, a social enterprise targeting women in the US and in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) was started in 2018 by Joy Kolin, a Somerville-resident, and international development professional. During her travels to over 60 countries, she encountered amazing and inspiring people, particularly women, with brilliant ideas but lacking the opportunity, capital and confidence to be self sustainable. Leveraging her 20 years’ experience in international development, she decided to found Giving Joy.

    • Giving Joy sells goods made by women worldwide and awards micro-grants to women entrepreneurs. Unique in its approach, Giving Joy supports existing social enterprises by passing on profits to other women via grants, and people who buy on the site have the opportunity to vote for a specific grant finalist, putting a face to the grant. As Founder and CEO, Joy awarded to date 15 grants to women in Massachusetts, Virginia, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda. Through this endeavor, she found a way to have a more direct role, positively impacting the lives of women around the world.

  2. Food for Free

    1. We believe that access to healthy food is a fundamental right.

    2. Food For Free improves access to healthy food within our community by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and creating new distribution channels to under-served populations with an emphasis on utilizing school systems to reach those in need. We envision a future where everyone in our community – regardless of age, income, or ability – has consistent access to fresh, healthy, delicious food.

    3. Through a combination of food rescue and transportation services, we give food programs year-round access to fresh fruits and vegetables, while our direct service programs bring food to students, seniors, and others most at risk of hunger. Our programs address not only short-term hunger, but also the long-term health effects of food insecurity and poor nutrition, while reducing food waste.
